Doxxing Defense: Removing Face Images from Search Engines and Face-Checking Apps

A common question in privacy and OSINT communities: "Are there services that remove face images from search engines or face-checking apps?" Short answer: yes — and it matters more in 2026 than it ever has.

The question, asked by a lot of people

Across privacy and OSINT subreddits, one variation of this question shows up every week:

"Any services available that remove face images from search engines or face-checking apps? Are there any ways to make a face impossible or very difficult to find matches of online?"

The fact that it keeps getting asked is the entire point. Once someone has a photo of your face, they can drop it into a face-search engine and surface every other public photo of you on the internet — with names, locations, and links. That's the doxxing pipeline most people don't realize exists.

Until recently the honest answer was "not really." That's changed. Here's the actual landscape in 2026.

What actually does the doxxing

"Face-checking apps" is a casual term for what the industry calls facial recognition search engines. The major ones are paid services that anyone with a credit card can use:

  • PimEyes — the most well-known. Reverse-image search for human faces.
  • Precheck.ai — markets itself for "background checks" but is functionally the same.
  • FaceCheck.id — popular for "catfish" detection on dating apps.
  • Clearview AI — restricted to law enforcement on paper, but the database (100B+ scraped faces) drives the industry.
  • Corsight, Social Catfish, ClarityCheck, EyeMatch, FindClone — others fill the same gap.

None of these need your name, email, or phone number. Your face is the search key. Upload a photo → get back URLs of every public page where that face appears. From there, identifying you takes minutes, not days.

Search engines vs. face-checking apps — different problems

It's worth separating two things people lump together:

Regular search engines (Google, Bing)

Index web pages and the images on them. They don't let strangers reverse-search a face directly. Google Images reverse-search exists but is much weaker than PimEyes-class tools, and Google is increasingly deprecating face-targeted search.

Mitigation: Standard SEO removal — contact site owners, file legal removal requests under GDPR/CCPA, or use Google's content removal tools for specific pages.

The legal lever: GDPR, CCPA, BIPA

Facial data is biometric data, and biometric data is treated more strictly than regular personal data under most modern privacy laws.

  • EU/UK GDPR — biometric data is a "special category." You have a right to erasure (Article 17). Companies must respond within 30 days.
  • California CCPA / CPRA — right to know what biometric data is held and right to deletion.
  • Illinois BIPA — one of the strongest laws in the world for facial data. Companies have paid hundreds of millions in BIPA settlements (Facebook $650M, TikTok $92M, Snapchat $35M).
  • LGPD (Brazil), PIPEDA (Canada), APPI (Japan), PIPL (China) — all classify biometric data as sensitive with explicit consent and deletion rights.
